About Sakha Republic (Yakutia)

Sakha Republic (Yakutia) is a region of the Russian Federation, which has unrivalled natural and territorial conditions. It has accumulated the unique experience of agricultural activity under extreme climate conditions of the North, the first technologies of constructing buildings on permafrost.

Sakha Republic (Yakutia) is located in the north-eastern part of Eurasia and is the largest region of the Russian Federation. The total area of the continental and insular (the Lyakhovskiye, Anju and De-Longa being the part of the Novosibirsk Islands of the Arctic Ocean) territory of Yakutia is 3.1 million square kilometers. Over 40% of the country is located beyond the Arctic Circle.

Sakha Republic (Yakutia) borders with Krasnoyarsk Region in the west, in the south-west – Irkutsk Region, in the south – Amur and Chita regions, in the south-east – Khabarovsk Region, in the east – Magadan Region and Chukotka Autonomous District. In the north it is washed by the Laptev Sea and the East-Siberian Sea. Total length of the sea coastline – over 4,500 kilometers.

Distance from Yakutsk to Moscow – 8468 kilometers by road, to Khabarovsk – 1590 kilometers by air.

Climate conditions of the Sakha Republic (Yakutia) is characterized as extreme. The climate is sharply continental with long winters and short summers.

In accordance with the Law of the Sakha Republic (Yakutia) “On Specially Protected Natural Territories” nearly three million hectares are classified as specially protected territories – ‘Ytyk Kere Sirder’.

At the moment the area of these territories is more than one-fourth of the territory of the Republic and includes more than two hundred specially protected territories.

The basis of the economy of the Sakha Republic (Yakutia) is industry mainly connected to processing of natural resources.

The leading role in the mining industry of the Republic is taken by the diamond mining industry. Sakha Republic (Yakutia) is the largest diamond mining province in Russia – it accounts for 90% of reserves and 95% of mining.

According to the 2010 Russian Census the total population of the Sakha Republic (Yakutia) was 958.5 thousand people. Share of the urban population – 64.1% and rural – 35.9%.

The Republic is home to representatives of more than 120 nationalities. Share of the Yakuts in the total population – 49.9%, Russians – 37.8%, Ukrainians – 2.2%, Evenks – 2.2%, Evens – 1.6% and Tatars – 0.9%.

The capital of the Sakha Republic (Yakutia) is Yakutsk – the largest city in the world located in the permafrost zone. Its population is 311,900 people.
